Expressing

Expressing refers to expressive language—the shared code we use to communicate thoughts and feelings, answer questions, and relate events. It may include gestures, signs, pictures, written words, or speech. It involves putting messages together and sending them.

The Expressing Body

Depending on the type of shared code that is being used for self-expression, some body parts participate more than others. The most common code, spoken language, requires you to have working systems for respiration, phonation, and articulation. For expressing with gestures, signs and picture symbols, it’s the torso, arms, hands, fingers, and sometimes even the legs, feet and toes that need to be in working order. All of the interacting body systems (nervous, musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory, gastrointestinal, integumentary, urinary, reproductive, immune, and endocrine) need to be functioning as well. Let’s just face it. Every part of the whole body plays an important role in expressing!

The Expressing Spirit

The Expressing Spirit communicates beauty, patience, compassion, empathy, mercy, peace, courtesy, sincerity, straightforwardness, goodness, quiet gentleness, yielding to others, and love for others. There are many avenues for your spirit to express itself with language. They include music, drama, creativity, humor, storytelling, conversing, sharing, praying, and having fun. The expressing spirit gives you the right words to say at the right time. It is the language of love in action. Don’t ever leave home without your expressing spirit…and don’t forget to bring it back home with you. ☺
